Problem Description Top
After a jumpstart install of some systems, such as the Ultra 5, 10, and
possibly others, the following error occurs during reboot -

Rebooting with commands: boot
Boot device: disk File and args:
SunOS Release 5.6 Version Generic_105181-05 [UNIX(R) System V Release 4.0]
Copyright (c) 1983-1997, Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Cannot load drivers for /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/disk@0,0:a
Can't load the root filesystem
Type 'go' to resume

Booting the system from the net to single user mode is successful and the
finish.log is examined with the following messages noted - (these messages
may differ depending on the hardware and OS version involved).

Problem Solution Top
Investigation revealed that the OS image on the install server had been
created in a directory with permissions of 700 rather than the 755 that
might normally be expected.

The problem is that when the patches needed to boot the systems mentioned
above try to install the checkinstall script fails to run, patches are not
installed, and ultimately the reboot will fail due to the inability to load
the appropriate drivers.

The solution is to redo the jumpstart installation after changing the
permissions for the directory containing the OS image to 755, or after
recreating the image by using setup_install_server to a directory with
755 permissions.

e.g.

# ls -l /export/install/26-598
total 14
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 5592 Apr 24 1998 Copyright
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 512 Apr 25 1998 Solaris_2.6
# ls -ld /export/install/26-598
drwx------ 4 root other 512 Apr 19 15:09 /export/install/26-598
# chmod 755 /export/install/26-598
